Phillip Ritchie Murder: Post #6
From the February 4, 1907 edition of the Harrisonburg Daily News.
Charged with having threatened to kill Chas. Roadcap on sight.
John Ritchie, a son of Philip Ritchie, for whose death Charles Roadcap will be placed on trial in the Circuit Court today, was locked up in jail Saturday evening on the charge of disorderly conduct. Officer Dovel made the arrest, after he had Ritchie under surveillance for several hours and after he had been informed that Ritchie had made threats against Roadcap's life.
Ritchie is a heavy set man of thirty years with jet black hair and moustache. He came to Harrisonburg Saturday morning from Hopkins Gap to attend the trial of his father's slayer. When he learned that the trial had been postponed to Monday he proceeded to get drunk and became quarrelsome. Meeting Roadcap in the courthouse yard during the afternoon, he engaged the latter in conversation and brought on a quarrel, during which Roadcap is said to have been struck in the face. Friends interfered and the two were separated.
Later in the day the police were informed that he would kill Roadcap on sight. Officer Dovel was detailed to look him up and shortly after 8 o'clock found him staggering out of a salon on Water street. He took him to jail. Ritchie had nearly $30 in cash on his person, when searched by Jailer Carickhoff.
He will have a hearing before Mayor Roller this morning.
