Surname Saturday: Dombrowski

Surname Saturday Post #2

October is Polish American Heritage Month and during this month I'll be featuring my Polish ancestor's surnames.

The surname Dombrowski comes from my mother's side of the family. My great-grandmother Mary Dombrowski was born in New York, in 1908. Her parents were Anthony (born about 1876) and Catherine (born about 1895) both were born in Poland, though little else is known about them.

Mary had 11 siblings

  • John (1906-1977)

  • Anna (1909-?)

  • Stella (1910-?)

  • Rose (1912-?)

  • Kazier or Kazimir (1915-?)

  • Zygmunt (1918-?)

  • Matilda (1920-?)

  • Celice or Celia (1921-?)

  • Wanda (1923-?)

  • Teddy (1924-?)

  • Monika (1925-?)

1925 Census

In the 1925 Census...

  • Anthony is a moulder

  • Catherine's name is Katie

  • Catherine does housework

  • John is a carpenter helper

  • Mary is a mattress maker

  • Anna, Stella, Rose, Kaizer, and Zygmunt go to school

As you can see, I know very little about Mary's family. My grandmother, Rita Mudrowsky Smith was very close to her Aunt Monika. Mary passed away due to hemorrhage giving birth to my grandmother. She was only 24 years old. My grandmother and her sister, Lora, grew up never really knowing their mother.

Mary married my great-grandfather Alex Mudrowsky sometime in the mid-to-late 1920s.

Alex, Mary, and possibly Alex's sister Teela, and unknown man.

Alex, Mary, Teela, Unknown

Mary and her brother, John, are both buried in Saint Stanislaus Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cheektowaga, New York.

Research Interests

  • What is Catherine's maiden name?

  • Where in Poland did they come from?

  • Where are Mary's siblings?
